Saint Paul, Minn- The Bethany Vikings improved to 1-1, beating the Macalester Scots 90-83. The Vikings dominated most of the game, and carried a lead from half-way through the first half to the end of the game.
For the first ten minutes it appeared it was going to be a close match-up, with the teams see-sawing back and forth for the lead, the score closely contested at 22-21 in the Vikings favor with nine minutes remaining in the half. Then the Vikings turned up the heat. For six minutes Bethany stopped Macalester from scoring, going on a 10-0 run that did not end until the Scot’s hit a jumper with 2:51 remaining in the half. From there the Vikings held onto a lead, taking a 41-29 advantage going into halftime.
Macalester came out of the break ready to fight, and shrunk Bethany’s lead down to three within the first five minutes of the half. Then the Vikings turned up the heat again. Aided by an 8-0 run sparked by Derek Peterson’s (Oakdale, Minn./Tartan) three-pointer, the men from Mankato rolled out a lead that reached 20 points with ten minutes left to play. Bethany easily coasted from there to a 90-83 final score.
Garrett Benson (Rochester, Minn./Rochester Mayo) came off the bench to lead the Viking onslaught with 30 points, and Peterson contributed an effort worthy of a double-double, scoring 12 and snagging 10 rebounds.
The Vikings will be at Carthage in Kenosha, Wisconsin, for a weekend tournament with games Friday and Saturday, times TBA.
