Mankato, Minn. – The men’s basketball team's season ended with a loss to Northwestern in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Championship.
The Vikings previously defeated Northwestern twice this season but Northwestern’s post-season tournament experience gave the Eagles an edge. Bethany got out to a fast start leading 20-9 with eight mintues left to go in the first half. Northwestern snuck back in it and the teams went into the locker room with Bethany on top 24-22. In the second half Northwestern caught fire and Bethany’s shots wouldn’t fall.
Northwestern shot 41.5 percent from the field and 36.0 percent from three-point range. The Vikings shot 30.2 percent from the field and 21.4 percent from behind the arc. Northwestern only shot 58.3 percent from the free-throw line but Bethany only got to the charity stripe once all game missing both shot attempts. The Eagles outrebounded the Vikings 42-38. Each team had eight turnovers.
Gavin Kroehler (Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson) led the Vikings in points scoring 14. He also had four rebounds, two assists and one steal. Derek Peterson was all over the floor (St. Paul, Minn./Tartan) with 12 points, nine rebounds, three assists, three blocks and one steal.
The Vikings end their season 16-11 overall. Bethany won the regular season UMAC Championship for the first time in school history and also set a new record for most consecutive wins with 13 in a row.
