Box Score St. Paul, Minn - For the first 37 and a half minutes, Bethany did not hold a single lead over Northwestern Saturday night in St. Paul. It doesn't matter how many minutes you trail though, it's how the game ends up and for the Vikings it ended up with a come-from-behind 67-64 victory over the Eagles. The win moves Bethany to 2-1 in UMAC play and 4-9 overall.
The comeback began with Bethany trailing by the biggest deficit of the game at 55-39 with 14 minutes. Alex Weldon started the surge with a three-pointer. Garrett Benson followed with a lay-up and Deon Wright added another three. In a little over a minute, the lead was cut in half.
The Vikings slowly cut away at the lead until a pair of Derek Peterson free throws notted the game at 60 with 5:17 left. A Benson jumper gave Bethany its first lead with 2:22 to go at 64-62. After Northwestern tied it at 64, Weldon put Bethany up to stay with a lay-up with 1:38 remaining.
Weldon led the Vikings with 16 points. Derek Peterson added 14. Patrick Garvin led the squad with ten rebounds.
Ellis Libby led the Eagles with 21 points. Tom Gisler and Lance Westberg added 16 and 13 points respectively.
Bethany heads home to start a 4-game homestand Friday when they entertain Northland for a 7:30 p.m. start.
