Box Score Mankato, Minn. - Senior Alex Weldon needed only one point to become the seventh Bethany basketball player, and third this season, to reach the 1000-point plateau. He got that and more as he scored 21 points, but it came in a losing effort as the Vikings lose a tight one at home to Northwestern 89-86 Friday night.
In a game where first place in the UMAC was on the line, Bethany held a five-point lead at halftime and extended that lead to eight early in the second half, but were unable to hold onto the lead and were unable to stop Eagles' sharp shooter Wade Chitwood.
Chitwood scored 33 points to lead four Northwestern players in double figures. Tom Gisler had 23 points while Matt Watnemo added 17 and Lance Westberg scored 12.
Gavin Kroehler led Bethany with27 points. Garet Tucker came off the bench to score 16 while Derek Peterson netted 15.
The Vikings shot 48.5% from the field, but only shot 28.6% from behind the arc. The Eagles shot 50.9% from the field while shooting 36.4% from the 3-point line. Bethany dominated the glass with 41 rebounds while Northwestern only grabbed 25 of their own.
The Vikings (9-12, 7-4 in UMAC) return to the home court tomorrow for Senior Day as they host North Central in the home finale at 5 p.m.
