Eagles hand Vikings first UMAC home loss of season

Box Score MANKATO, Minn. --- The Bethany men's basketball team was looking to win their second game in as many days as Northwestern came to town. The Eagles broke open a tight game at the end of the first half and extended that advantage throughout the second half as they would go on to hand the Vikings their first UMAC home loss of the season 77-59.

With Bethany down 14-9 early, Mitch Hopkins came off the bench and provided the Vikings with a spark. He scored nine of his 12 first half points in a three-minute span to pull BLC to within two halfway through the opening half. Luke Roddy's 3 gave Bethany its first lead at 21-20 with 6:44 left in the stanza. Northwestern, though, closed out the half on an 8-0 run over the final minute and a half to into the locker room up 33-26.

The Eagles used that momentum they gained at the end of the first half and brought it with them to start the second. Jacob Wensmann would twice cut Bethany's deficit to five with baskets, but that was all the closer the Vikings would get.

Roddy and Wensmann each scored 15 points to lead the Vikings.

Bethany (2-12, 1-2 in UMAC) next play Friday at Northland.
