Vikings end season in thrilling fashion

Box Score MANKATO, Minn. - The Bethany men's basketball team needed a win in the regular season finale and some help to qualify for the UMAC Postseason Tournament. The Vikings came in a game behind St. Scholastica for the fourth and final spot. Bethany got their win in exciting fashion 67-66 over Crown, but the Saints won also in the final seconds at Northwestern meaning the Vikings season comes to an end.

When Bethany and Crown last met three weeks ago in St. Bonifacius, the Vikings scored the final five points of the game to pull out a come-from-behind 95-94 win. It was nearly the same scenario on Saturday. Crown led 66-61 with a minute and half remaining. Luke Roddy hit a pair of free throws to make it 66-63. Rodney Pierce-Tyler worked his way open for a lay-in off an inbounds pass from Roddy to cut it to one at 66-65 with ten seconds left. Crown's Bryce Williams missed the front end of a 1-and-1. Pierce-Tyler rebounded, dribbled up the court and found Trent Kuechenmeister underneath for the go-ahead lay-in with three seconds to go. Miles Kelson deflected Crown's inbounds pass and Bethany came away with a thrilling one-point win.

Nick Sanborn led the way with 19 points. Chris Scarver added 13 in his final collegiate game and Kuechenmeister tallied 11. Pierce-Tyler scored eight and pulled down seven rebounds.

Bethany wraps up the season at 8-17 overall and 7-7 in the UMAC.
