Northwestern Comes From Behind to Defeat Men's Basketball

 
ST. PAUL – The Bethany Vikings and Northwestern Eagles squared off on Saturday afternoon at the Ericksen Center in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference basketball. The Eagles used a strong second half to defeat Bethany 74-63.
 
After falling to North Central on Friday night, the men's basketball team opened the game against Northwestern with a lot of energy and excitement, trying to upset the top seeded Eagles on their home court. Neil Eichten's floater in the paint extended the Vikings lead to seven with just under four minutes remaining in the opening half.
 
Bethany shot 46.4% (13-28) compared to the Eagles 38.5% (10-26) from the field, which helped contribute to a 28-25 lead for the Vikings at the half. Nick Sanborn led all Vikings with 10 points in the opening 20 minutes of action.
 
The Eagles came out of the locker room hot, scoring 19 points and taking an eight point lead nine minutes into the second half. The Vikings continued to battle in the UMAC contest, cutting the Eagles lead to two points (56-54) with just under four minutes left. The Eagles continued their hot shooting in the second half of play to earn their 12th victory of the season, and secure the number one seed in the UMAC.
 
Looking at the numbers:
  • Brandyn Frelix led all Vikings with 17 points and eight rebounds
  • Nick Sanborn finished with 16 points and six rebounds
  • Neil Eichten added 14 points at the guard position
  • Zach Brandts recorded 10 points and seven rebounds off the bench for Bethany.
  • Bethany shot 44.6% (29-65) from the field
  • Northwestern's Porter Morrell had a game high 28 points

The Vikings (8-15, 6-8 in UMAC) will finish their regular season schedule next weekend as they travel to Crown and Minnesota Morris. On Friday, tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. from the gymnasium on the campus of Crown College.
