MANKATO, Minn. – The Bethany Lutheran women's basketball team (1-0) started off their season with a decisive victory over Waldorf (1-5) by a score of 89-67.
The Vikings did not trail at all in the contest and held a 13 point lead going into the half by a score of 44-31. The Warriors stormed back in the third quarter as they cut the lead to six with just under five minutes to go. From the 4:41 mark of the third quarter on, the Vikings ended the game on a 37-21 run to put the Warriors away.
The Vikings had ten players get good playing time with all ten of them scoring. The first-year duo of Abby Olson and Hanna Geistfeld scored 24 and 13 points respectively, leading the Vikings while shooting a combined 15-19 from the field. Geistfeld also tallied a team-high eight rebounds, while Olson followed closely behind her with 7. Brooke Henning led the Vikings with five assists and also added 12 points. As a team, the Vikings totaled 21 assists.
Last year, the Vikings set the school record for field goal percentage in a game by shooting 52.8 percent in a contest against St. Scholastica. Tonight, the Vikings broke that record by posting a field goal percentage of 54.1. Although they struggled to shoot it from outside, going 1-14 in tonight's game, the Vikings shot an impressive 32-47 from inside the arc for a whopping 68 percent.
Up Next: The Vikings will defend their home court with a non-conference game against Central College of Iowa on Saturday, November 18 at 4 PM.
