DULUTH, Minn. – The Bethany women's basketball team (6-2, 1-1) beat St. Scholastica (3-4, 0-2) on the road in their second UMAC game of the season. The Vikings found their stride in the second half and won by a final score of 56-51.
The Vikings got off to a slow start on the road against the Saints. Bethany scored 10 points in the first quarter and seven in the second quarter. As a team, Bethany shot 22.7% from the field and 16.7% from behind the arc. The Vikings struggled with 12 first-half turnovers and went into halftime down 29-17.
The Vikings turned the game around and played well in the third quarter, cutting the lead to 36-28 after a baseline layup by junior guard Haley Sandin. Three possessions later, the Saints lead was gone and the Vikings held a one point advantage after Brooke Henning, Abby Olson, and Haley Sandin buried three consecutive three-pointers. The Saints reclaimed the lead with two free-throws at the end of the third quarter, leading the Vikings 38-37 heading into the fourth.
The Vikings quickly got back on top in the fourth quarter and were up 50-45 after a step-back jumper from sophomore guard Emily Skrien. The Saints put the press on in the last two minutes of the game, but the Vikings came away with a win on the road.
Junior guard Haley Sandin led the Vikings with 15 points. Hanna Geistfeld nearly had a double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds. Abby Olson played a solid game for the Vikings with eight points and seven rebounds. Emily Skrien added eight points as well.
Up Next: The Vikings are on the road again and will play Martin Luther in New Ulm on Wednesday, December 13 at 7:30 PM.
