SUPERIOR, Wis. – After an exciting victory over Martin Luther College in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) quarterfinals matchup, the Bethany Lutheran women's basketball team traveled to the University of Wisconsin-Superior to take on the Yellowjackets in the semifinal round.
The Yellowjackets continued its dominance against UMAC foes, winning its 35th-straight game against conference competition including two-straight undefeated regular seasons and three postseason victories as the Yellowjackets defeated Bethany Lutheran 69-54 in the UMAC Tournament semifinal round on Wednesday night.
NOTES PRIOR TO TIP-OFF:
Wisconsin-Superior locked up the No. 1 seed in the tournament after cruising to another perfect 16-0 conference record following a big win over Minnesota Morris in the final game of the season Saturday. The Vikings will look to avenge losses of 16 and 17 points against the Yellowjackets this season coming off a thrilling home quarterfinal win Monday. The Yellowjackets have a trio of talent leading the way this season in Hailey Kontny, Hannah Norlin and Eva Reinertsen. Kontny and Norlin were among the top scorers in the league for UMAC games this season averaging 14.0 ppg and 12.8 ppg, respectively. Kontny shoots over 41 percent from the field while Norlin was second in the league (50.3 percent). Reinertsen added 11.0 ppg off the bench as a rookie.
After a game with early foul trouble Monday, the Vikings may again look to Brooke Henning to lead the team after she who poured in 21 points Monday. Sophomore Haley Sandin was second in league-play, though, in scoring with 17.8 ppg and should be a factor, while Minnie Frederick-Childress brings an edge to the Viking squad as the league assists and steals leader. She also contributes 10.9 ppg.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- UWS would score 27 points off 28 Viking turnovers.
- UWS also hit 16-of-23 shots from the free throw line compared to the Vikings eight total free throws.
- The Yellowjackets opened the second half with a 7-0 run to go up 16 and never looked back en route to the big win.
- BLC out-shot the Yellowjackets throughout the 40 minute contest, shooting 40.4 percent compared to 35.8 percent from UWS.
- BLC knocked down seven three-pointers compared to UW-Superior's five.
- Both teams had two players reach double digits in the scoring column.
- UWS held the rebound advantage, 43-36.
- The Vikings had 16 team assists while the Yellowjackets recorded 14.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- Junior Brooke Henning (Worthington, Minn.) continued her strong postseason play by scoring 18 points on Wednesday night. The forward brought down nine rebounds as well.
- Sophomore Haley Sandin (Zimmerman, Minn.) added 11 points and seven rebounds.
- Senior Minnie Frederick-Childress (Flint, Mich.) scored nine points in her final game for the Vikings.
Head Coach Lyle Jones and the 2016-17 Vikings finish the season with an overall record of 13-14 while holding down a 9-7 conference mark.
