Vikings handle Saints, win fifth game in a row

MANKATO, Minn. – The Bethany Vikings (14-4, 7-2) hosted the St. Scholastica Saints (9-8, 5-4) to open up the second round of conference play. It was an important game for both the Vikings and Saints as contenders at the top of league standings. The Vikings dominated the ballgame from start to finish and captured an impressive 85-60 win.

Tied at 10 points apiece with three minutes left in the first quarter, the Vikings went on a 12-3 run to take control and they never looked back. The Vikings started the second quarter with a jumper from Brooke Henning to keep the momentum in their favor. The Saints were able to hang with the Vikings for a little while longer, but another scoring spree from the Vikings gave them a 17 point cushion heading into halftime. Abby Olson and Dakota Ellinghuysen were big contributors in the first half with 14 points and 13 points respectively.

The Vikings continued to push the tempo and attack the Saints in the third quarter, stretching their lead to 31 points after a pair of free throws from Dakota Ellinghuysen. The sizeable lead for the Vikings was too much for the Saints to overcome, and Bethany cruised to an 85-60 victory.

Abby Olson had another stellar performance for the Vikings as she scored a game-high 26 points on 10-16 shooting from the field including 4-6 from deep. Dakota Ellinghuysen scored 15 points on the night and Haley Sandin added 13. As a group, the Vikings were 30-64 (46.9%) from the field overall and 6-13 (46.2%) from the three-point line. The Vikings also added 19-23 from the free throw line to boost their advantage.

Up Next: The Vikings will play at home against MLC on Wednesday, January 24. Tipoff is 7:30 PM.
