Mankato, Minn. – The Bethany Vikings (16-8, 12-3) hung on to beat the UW-Superior Yellowjackets (6-18, 4-11) in their final home game of the regular season. The Yellowjackets handed the Vikings their first loss of the conference season back on January 6, but the Vikings got their revenge today, hanging on to win by a final score of 72-71.
The Vikings dominated the first half of play shooting 55.6% from the field and 8-14 from behind the three-point line. The Viking defense limited the Yellowjackets to just 30 points and 41.7% shooting while forcing seven turnovers. Neil Eichten scored 14 points in the first half and was 4-4 from deep. At the break, the Vikings led 46-30.
The Vikings slowed down offensively in the second half. As a team, they shot just 33.3% from the field and 3-14 from behind the arc. The Yellowjackets were 46.4% from the field in the second half and 5-10 from behind the three-point line. The lead that BLC built up in the first half made it tough for Superior to come all the way back, but they had one last opportunity. After a missed free throw from the Vikings, Shaq Coleman dribbled the length of the court and missed a three-pointer off the front of the rim at the buzzer.
The Vikings hold a 0.5 game lead over St. Scholastica who has played one less conference game to this point.
Up Next: The Vikings travel to North Central on Wednesday, February 14th for their last game of the regular season. Tipoff is 5:30 PM.
