Superior, WIS. – The Vikings women's basketball team lost 74-61 to the University of University of Wisconsin Superior Yellowjackets. The lose puts the Vikings record at 18-5, their UMAC record at 13-2, and breaks their nine game winning streak.
The game started out rough for the Vikings, who found themselves on the bad side of a 10-3 run to start the game. The Vikings would try to fight back from there, but with two minutes left in the first quarter, they still found themselves down 20-13. The Yellowjackets would hold back the Vikings offense, and end the quarter with a 22-13 lead. The Vikings started the second quarter out well, closing the gap to just 26-23. They would tie the game up at 28, and from then on the rest of the half would go be a heated battle, with the Yellowjackets pulling a way with a 34-31 lead at the end.
The Yellowjackets would jump out to a 50-39 lead in the third quarter, and they would go into the fourth quarter with an eight point, 55-47 lead. The Yellowjackets would carry that momentum into the forth, and run up to a 70-55 lead. The Vikings would not be able to fight back, and would lose 74-61.
The loss makes it so that the Vikings will not be able to have the sole ownership of the UMAC championship. The Vikings could tie for first, if the Yellowjackets lost next week and the Vikings won. If that happens the Vikings will clench the #2 seed in the UMAC tournament. If the Yellowjackets win, the Vikings could still clench the #2 seed with a win at home on Wednesday.
Up next: The Vikings look to guarantee a #2 seed in the UMAC tournament at home against North Central University on Wednesday, February 13th at 5:30 p.m.
