CHICAGO, Ill. - The Bethany Lutheran men's basketball team concluded their Chicago trip with a 95-81 win over Fontbonne. With the win the Vikings move 4-0 overall while the Griffins fall to 0-3.
Fontbonne showed why they were picked to win their conference early in this one as they jumped out to a 23-16 lead early. Bethany would respond and go on a 16-3 run of their own capped off by an Aleck Sharma three to lead 32-26. The Vikings would continue to close out the half strong, getting contributions from multiple players as they pushed to a 44-33 lead heading into half.Â
The second half started out with Drew Sagedahl outscoring the Griffins 8-2 to start the half and put Bethany up 52-35. As we reached the midway point of the second half, Fontbonne caught fire as they hit three straight threes to to trim the lead to 68-59 with 10 minutes to play. The Vikings would once again respond though as they scored nine of the next 11 points to extend their lead to 16. From that point on, Bethany would continue to hold a double-digit lead with Mason Ackley putting the exclamation point on the game with a poster dunk with two and a half minutes to go to all but end it.
All five starters for the Vikings finished in double figures with Sagedahl leading the bunch with 20 points to go along with three assists and three steals. Justin Schrupp added 16 points while Ackley had 14 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists. The Vikings committed just eight turnovers in the contest despite heavy pressure from the Griffins and also shot 17-18 from the line.Â
Bethany will be back in action on Tuesday when they host Central for a 7 p.m. matchup.
