Vikings Rally From Down 20 for First Win of Season

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. - The Bethany women's basketball team rallied from down 20 points to defeat UW-Platteville 76-71 on Saturday for their first win of the season. With the win the Vikings move to 1-4 while the Pioneers fall to 1-4.

The Vikings got off to a slow start in this one, allowing a 20-0 run in the first quarter that allowed the Pioneers to take a 27-12 lead after 10 minutes. The teams then played even the first five minutes of the second quarter before Bethany would finally get things going as they outscored Platteville 10-5 in the final five minutes to trail 41-31 at the halftime break.

The third quarter would be where Bethany made their mark on this one. They outscored the home team 22-9 in the frame with six different players finding the score sheet as they shot 8-of-14 from the field in the frame and held Platteville to 3-of-14 shooting and 1-of-8 from beyond the arc.

With the Vikings leading 53-50 heading into the fourth quarter, the Pioneers would cut the deficit to one a few different times, but Bethany would answer each time. A Taryn Christensen and-1 proved to be a key moment after Platteville was able to trim the lead to one midway through. Then, as time started to wind down, Bethany would make their free throws late and get a key layup from Sara Kottke to seal the victory.

Kottke returned for the first time since her injury last season and led the team with 14 points off the bench on 4-of-7 shooting. Haley Meyer posted 13 points to supplement the offense while Taryn Christensen posted a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Skylar Cotten and Alexis Cloyd rounded out the five Vikings in double figures with 10 points each.

Bethany now has a few weeks before their next contest when they'll host UW-Eau Claire on Dec. 6.
