Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Kohawks Use Strong Second Quarter to Defeat Vikings

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Bethany Lutheran women's basketball team traveled to Coe College on Tuesday afternoon and dropped the nonconference matchup 73-57. With the loss the Vikings fall to 3-8 while the win moves the Kohawks to 9-3.

After things started out at 4-4 in this one, Coe ripped off seven straight points to gain the advantage early. Bethany would respond with a run of their own with Ashley Schindele knocking down a three-pointer with 2:13 remaining in the first to cut the lead to 13-11. The home team would extend their lead back to six points but a Taryn Christensen layup with time winding down would trim the deficit back to four as the teams ended the first frame. The second quarter was where the Kohawks left their mark on this one though. After outscoring the Vikings by just one point in the four and a half minutes of action, they would finish the quarter shooting 8-of-12 from the field and outscoring the Vikings 19-9 to take a 43-28 lead to the half.

Coe would continue to press their advantage in the third frame, starting the quarter on a 14-5 run to get out to their biggest lead of the afternoon at 24. A pair of Christensen free throws and an Annika Holmstrom three pointer to end the quarter would cut the lead to 19 points heading into the final 10 minutes. In the the fourth, Bethany would outscore Coe 14-11 as Annika Younge scored eight points, going a perfect 6-for-6 from the line but the Kohawks would hold on for victory.

Younge led the Vikings with 10 points and adding five rebounds, while Ashanti Boykin also played an all around solid contest totaling six points, six rebounds, three assists, and two steals.

Bethany will return to action on Dec. 29 when they travel to the Wartburg Tournament to take on Simpson at 3 p.m.
