Vikings Take Down Cougars on Senior Day

MANKATO, Minn. — The Bethany Lutheran women's basketball team (17-6 overall, 12-0 UMAC) celebrated Senior Day with a 75-63 victory over Minnesota Morris (9-13, 6-5) Saturday afternoon. With the win, BLC extended its streak to 10 games, the second-longest in program history in the NCAA Division III era.

The team honored its three seniors, Laura Ellinghuysen (Winona, Minn.), Hanna Geistfeld (Truman, Minn.), and Abby Olson (Montevideo, Minn.) prior to tipoff.

Morris' zone gave Bethany some troubles early, but consecutive threes late in the quarter by junior Taryn Christensen (South Sioux City, Neb.) gave the Vikings a 17-13 lead after one.

BLC extended its run to 11-0 early in the second and grabbed a 35-24 lead at the intermission. Geistfeld finished the half with 11 points and 11 rebounds, good for her 17th double double of the season. She also broke her own single-season record with her 221st made field goal midway through the second quarter. Her previous record of 217 was set in the 2019-20 season.

Freshman Alexis Cloyd (Garden City, Minn.) contributed 10 points and a team-high five assists in the half.

A discombobulated third quarter that featured a combined 14 turnovers and better than 60% shooting from the field for both teams ended with the Vikings ahead, 52-45.

Bethany quickly pushed the lead to 10 in the final frame and did not look back.

Geistfeld finished with a game-high 33 points and 21 rebounds. It was the senior's fourth straight 30-point performance.

Cloyd scored 15 points and had a game-high seven assists, which also tied her career best.

BLC outrebounded Morris 42-25 and held a 25-15 edge in assists during the contest.

The Vikings will finish their regular season on a two-game road trip, starting in St. Paul, Minn., against Northwestern next Friday at 5:30 p.m.
