Vikings Triumph Over Jills in Record-Setting Night

MANKATO, Minn.—The top-seeded Bethany Lutheran women's basketball team (19-7 overall) ran away with a 105-53 win over eighth-seeded Northland College (1-20) in the quarterfinal round of the UMAC Tournament Wednesday night.

The Vikings got all they wanted offensively through two quarters, as an 18-0 run capped off a 60-24 advantage entering the intermission. Bethany made 13 triples in the half, including a career-high six by freshman Haley Meyer (Centerville, S.D.) and five from junior Ashley Schindele (Kimball, Minn.). Out of 22 total made field goals for BLC, 21 were assisted on, led by freshman Grace Gerken's (Brandon, S.D.) career-high seven.

Three players reached double figures by halftime. Meyer led with 20 points, senior Hanna Geistfeld (Truman, Minn.) scored 17 on a perfect 7-7 from the floor, and Schindele added 15.

Early in the fourth quarter, a three-pointer by junior Taryn Christensen (South Sioux City, Neb.) gave the Vikings a new single-game record for three pointers made with 17, breaking the old mark set at Martin Luther College on Jan. 23, 2019. Bethany ended the night with 21 triples on 53 attempts (39.6%).

In all, 13 Vikings found themselves in the scoring column.

Meyer scored 25 points and made seven three-pointers, both of which were career highs. Schindele followed with 21 points on six treys. Geistfeld finished with 17 points, 10 rebounds, and seven assists. It was her 20th double double of the season, which set a new single season record as she surpassed the 19 set by Jessica Merseth (2006-07).

Gerken notched a career-high 11 total assists as part of a program-record 34 in the game. This bested the previous mark of 32 set at Crown on Feb. 4, 2021.

BLC came out victorious in virtually every statistical category, including owning a 38-8 advantage in points off turnovers.

Bethany will host fourth-seeded Minnesota Morris in a UMAC Tournament semifinal game Friday night at 7 p.m.
