ST. PAUL, Minn.—The fourth-seeded Bethany Lutheran men's basketball team (14-12) was defeated 96-88 at No. 1-seed Northwestern University (21-6) Friday night in the UMAC Tournament semifinal round. The loss ends BLC's season.
Senior Cire Mayfield (St. Louis Park, Minn.) became the program's all-time leading scorer in the contest, surpassing Tommy Saffert (2006-10), who previously held the record at 1,265 points.
The Vikings raced out to an 18-10 lead seven minutes into the contest, but the Eagles got hot and took a 52-41 lead into halftime.
Northwestern extended its lead to 20 at 71-51 with 13 minutes to play in the game. Bethany battled back to within five under a minute to go at 90-85, but UNW pulled away to advance to the UMAC Tournament Championship.
Senior Brian Smith (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) led the Vikings with 22 points and five assists in the game.
Mayfield finished with 18 to set the new all-time mark with 1,274 career points. He achieved the record on his layup with 9:14 to play in the second half.
Junior Hunter Nielsen (New Prague, Minn.) recorded his sixth double double of the season with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Classmate Justin Schrupp (Danube, Minn.) had 10 points to round out those in double figures.
BLC forced 10 turnovers and converted those into 21 points on the night.
