Women's Basketball Gets Big Win Over Yellowjackets

SUPERIOR, Wis. – The Bethany women's basketball team rebounded from Friday's loss in a big way on Saturday as they defeated UW-Superior 66-48.  With the win the Vikings improve to 7-14 overall and 5-5 in the UMAC while the Yellowjackets fall to 7-12 overall and 5-5 in conference.

After UW-Superior would score the first four points on the contest, the Vikings would respond with eight straight to gain an early edge. The Yellowjackets would tie things up before Bethany was able to slowly gain a lead back, with an Ashley Schindele three with time winding down in the first quarter giving them a 17-13 lead heading into the second frame.

After UWS tied things at 17 early in the second quarter, the Vikings went on a quick 11-2 run thanks to an and-one by Kaylee Hunter, a pair of triples from Schindele, and a layup from Sara Kottke to hold a 28-19 lead. Scoring would slow down late in the first half, but Megan Wegner would score with 20 seconds remaining to push Bethany to a 32-22 halftime advantage.

After the Vikings got the first two points of the half, Superior ripped off nine straight to cut the deficit to three with 7:17 left. The Vikings would slowly push their lead to nine before UWS would cut it back to four with 20 seconds left in the quarter. Gianna Spain would hit a three with time winding down though to push Bethany back up by seven heading into the fourth. The Vikings would carry over the momentum in the fourth quarter as they dominated from start to finish, outscoring the Yellowjackets 21-10 to take the win.

Kottke led Bethany in the contest as he posted 19 points to go along with six rebounds. Schindele also finished in double digits as she had 12 points and a team-best eight rebounds.
