MARSHALL, Minn. - The Bethany Lutheran women's basketball team Saturday took on undefeated Division II SMSU in an exhibition on Saturday afternoon and fell by a score of 111-58. With the win the Mustangs improve to 7-0 on the season.
Lexiss Trygg and
Aubrea Kor would each find the bottom of the net in the first few minutes of this one as they would play to a 4-4 score two minutes in. Baskets then by
Gianna Klarenbeek and
Kenadi Arndt would keep the Vikings in it as the Mustangs would lead 9-8 before they would go on a big run to end the quarter. They would score 14 of the next 16 points before an Arndt layup would halt the run with a minute to go in the frame. SMSU would add one more basket late and lead 25-12 after a quarter.
SMSU would score the first four points of the second before back to back baskets from Bethany cut the deficit to 29-17. The Mustangs would push their lead to 17 points a few minutes later but buckets from Trygg and Kor brought the margin back down to 13. The Vikings would keep the deficit there for a few minutes before six straight to end the half from SMSU made it 46-27 at the break.
A Kor three would open the third for Bethany before SMSU started to find their groove offensively. The home team would have their best shooting quarter in the third, going 12-of-19 and 4-of-8 from three to put up 33 points. Bethany also had their best shooting effort of the contest in the third as well, as they would connect on 3-of-5 three pointers in the frame to score 19 points and would trail 79-46 headed to the fourth.
The Vikings would struggle from the field in the final frame, going 5-of-17 while SMSU would continue their strong shooting with an 11-of-18 performance to claim the 111-58 win.
Kor led the Vikings in the contest with 11 points to go along with four rebounds and three assists while Klarenbeek added 10 points and five rebounds. Trygg and Arndt also added eight points each with Arndt also grabbing a team-best seven boards.
Bethany will be back in action on Tuesday when they host UW-Eau Claire for a 7 p.m. contest.
