COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Bethany Lutheran men's basketball team competed at their second contest in Colorado Springs on Saturday, falling to tournament host Colorado College 86-75. With the loss the Vikings fall to 0-2 while the Tigers move to 2-0.
It was once again a slow start offensively for both teams, as
Jax Madson would knock down the game's first field goal three minutes in and a
Drew Sagedahl three pointer seven minutes into the contest would bring the score to just 9-9. Things would start to pick up from there though, as Sagedahl would help the Vikings go on a 9-2 run with five more points as Bethany would claim an 18-11 lead midway through the first half.
The Vikings would continue to click over the next few minutes, as they would score on four straight possessions to gain a 10 point lead and a few possessions later
DJ Akpati would knock down a triple to give Bethany a 30-18 lead with six minutes to go in the half. A Madson layup with 3:30 left would give the Vikings their biggest lead of the contest at 33-20, but Colorado College would bounce back and cut the deficit to eight at 37-29 as the teams headed to the half.
The Tigers would come out of the second half break strong, scoring on their first four possessions but a pair of layups from
Kegan Heiderscheidt and an assisted basket from the junior would keep the Vikings up six. Back to back baskets from Madson would then extend the lead to 10 points but CC would respond with an 8-1 run to cut the lead down to three. Bethany would hang onto the lead for the next few minutes and keep some momentum, until Colorado College was able to make their run with just under 10 minutes to go. With the Vikings leading 62-58, the Tigers would score 14 straight points with Bethany going 0-of-4 from the field and committing four turnovers during the stretch.
A
Jack Brockmann three-pointer would halt the skid for the Vikings who would fight their way back in over the next few minutes. Sagedahl would knock down a pair of free throws to bring the score to 76-71 with just over two minutes to play, but Colorado College would get a pair of stops and score on three straight possessions to take an 11 point lead with a minute left and go on to close out the game 86-75 from there.
Sagedahl led the Vikings with 20 points and seven rebounds in the contest, while Madson added 15. Heiderscheidt and
Mekhi Murphy were also in double figures with 10 each while Akpati added nine points off the bench.
Bethany will next be in action on Thursday when they travel to Saint Mary's for a 7 p.m. contest.
