MANKATO, Minn. - The Bethany Lutheran women's basketball team was without two of its top three scorers on Saturday afternoon and fell to UW-Stevens Point by a score of 68-55. With the loss the Vikings fall to 1-7 on the year while the Pointers move to 6-1.
After
Aubrea Kor connected on a three just a minute in to even the score, Stevens Point would hold the advantage over the next five minutes as they would score nine straight to go up 12-3.
Brea Mertz would then finish a reverse layup to break the drought before her three point shot a few minutes later brought the score to 16-11. UWSP would connect on a free throw with 25 seconds to go and would carry a six point lead into the second quarter.
It was a slow start to the second for Bethany, who wouldn't score until three and a half minutes in as a pair of
Arinn McGee free throws made it 25-13. Fellow post Lexiss Trygg woudl then leave her mark on the quarter, as she would score five points to propel the Vikings on a 7-2 run and cut the deficit to seven points at 27-20. UWSP would then re-extend their lead to 11 points and they would take that number to the half with a score of 35-24.Â
An and-one from Kor early in the third would pull the deficit down to 10 points before quickly push it back to 14. Layups on back-to-back possessions from Kor and McGee would bring the deficit back to 10, before Stevens Point made their run to end the frame. Over the final 5:16 they would outscore the Vikings 10-3 and carry a 56-39 lead into the fourth quarter. Â
A Trygg and-one to open the fourth would cut the lead back to 14 points, but UWSP didn't budge much from there as Bethany just couldn't cut back into things. With the Pointers leading by 19 with just over two minutes to go, Maria Beatriz Ferriera would bury three pointers on back-to-back possessions but that was as close as they would get as they fell by a score of 68-55.Â
Kor and Trygg each led Bethany with 12 points in the contest with Kor also adding three rebounds. McGee had a solid day as well for the Vikings as she scored eight points and added five rebounds and two blocks.Â
The Vikings will next be in action on Thurdsay when they host UW-River Falls in a 7 p.m. contest.Â
