Men's Basketball Caps of Undefeated UMAC Slate with Win Over Superior

MANKATO, Minn. - The Bethany Lutheran men's basketball team wrapped up their UMAC regular season slate with an undefeated 14-0 record after an 87-70 win over UW-Superior on Saturday afternoon. With the win the Vikings finish the regular season 22-3 overall and 14-0 in the UMAC while the Yellowjackets are 17-8 and 9-5 in the conference. The 14 wins in conference is a new program record for the Vikings, who will now be the No. 1 seed and have home court advantage in the UMAC Tournament.

The lead would change hands seven times through the first eight minutes of the contest before back to back three pointers from Drew Sagedahl and Jax Madson would put the Vikings up 19-14.

UWS would eventually even up the game at 26 apiece with seven minutes to play and neither squad would create any separation until four straight points from the Vikings to end the half put them up 44-40 at the break.

The Yellowjackets would come out the break on a 6-1 run to take a 46-45 but Bethany would answer back and take a 55-48 lead. After Superior brought the deficit back to one the Vikings would use an 11-2 run capped off by back to back Hunter Nielsen baskets to claim a 66-56 edge.

From that point on UWS couldn't fight their way back in. They would hang around that 10 point mark until Nielsen got another two buckets inside to put the Vikings up 14 with five minutes to play.

Superior couldn't claw back in from there, as Bethany would hang on for the 87-70 win.

Nielsen had a big game for the Vikings, scoring 24 points, adding seven rebounds, and block four shots while Sagedahl added 21 points off the bench. Patterson and Madson also reached double digits with 14 and 13 points, respectively, while Mason Ackley hauled in a game-high 15 rebounds.

Bethany will now host Northwestern on Wednesday night in a UMAC semifinal matchup at 7 p.m.
