MANKATO, Minn. - The Bethany Lutheran women's basketball team Saturday afternoon took on UW-Superior and fell to the Yellowjackets by a score of 75-63. With the loss the Vikings will finish the season at 7-18 overall and 7-7 in the UMAC while the Yellowjackets move to 17-8 overall and 13-1 in the conference.
The two teams would play even the first few minutes of the contest before the Yellowjackets were able to climb out to a 17-11 with two minutes to go. They would then go basket for basket late, with
Lexiss Trygg putting in the last score to make the deficit 21-17 after one.
Bethany would cut the lead to two points early in the second before UWS would slowly start to build it back up, going up 34-25 with two minutes to go. The Vikings would answer late though, closing the half on a 4-0 run thanks in part to an
Ashanti Boykin and-one to make the score 34-29 at the break.
After Superior would go up nine three minutes into the third the Vikings would mount a comeback, scoring 10 straight points to take their first lead since early in the first quarter. They would hang onto that lead until the waning moments of the quarter, but a UWS three with time expiring would put them up 51-49 headed to the fourth.
The Vikings would even things up two minutes into the fourth at 54 apiece before six straight from UWS would put them ahead 60-54. Four straight from Bethany though would pull them back within two with five minutes to go. Superior would once again answer, getting a bucket in the paint before a step back three to go up 65-58 with 2:30 to play.
The Yellowjackets would continue to push their momentum, scoring twice more in the paint in the next minute to go up 11 with 1:24 to go. After each team would connect on a pair of free throws,
Gianna Klarenbeek would hit a three to cut the deficit to eight, but that was as close as they would get as UWS was able to connect on their free throws to take the win.
Trygg led the Vikings in the contest with 15 points to go along with eight rebounds while Klarenbeek added 12.
Juliana Ewald and
Megan Wegner also each finished in double figures with 10 points apiece.
