Sagedahl's Second Half Outburst Lifts Vikings Over Yellowjackets

SUPERIOR, Wis. - Drew Sagedahl scored 19 second half points on Saturday afternoon as the Bethany Lutheran men's basketball team claimed a hard fought 73-69 victory over UW-Superior. With the win the Vikings improve to 12-11 overall and 9-3 in the UMAC while the Yellowjackets fall to 11-12 overall and 8-4 in conference play.

The first six and a half minutes played even as each team poured in 13 points before Bethany scored eight unanswered to take a 21-13 edge. Bethany would maintain their lead and keep it at eight points with as few as 5:13 to play in the first half, but the Jackets would close the frame in strong fashion, outscoring Bethany 17-8 in the final five-plus minutes to lead 39-38 at the half.

The second got going and it was Sagedahl who started to leave his mark early and often in the frame. He would bury a three with 17:16 to go to put the Vikings up 43-41, before another three just over a minute later put them on top 48-43.

Bethany would then hit a lull offensively, as UWS would even the game at 54 apiece before back-to-back finishes inside from Sagedahl made it 58-54. After Superior scored three straight, it was once again Sagedahl from deep to put the Vikings back up four.

UWS would keep things close over the next few minutes, but with Bethany leading by two with 3:17 to go, Sagedahl would connect on a deep range straightaway three and draw a foul for a four point play to put the Vikings up six. The Yellowjackets would quickly trim the lead back to one point with 1:54 to go, but Sagedahl would hit a fadeaway midrange shot that put the Vikings back up by three. After a miss on the other end, Sagedahl would find Dominik Bangu with the shot clock winding down for what proved to be the dagger as his three put them up six with 55 seconds to play and they would hang onto the win from there.

Sagedahl had 25 total points in the game to lead all scorers while also adding six rebounds and six assists. Bangu and Jax Madson added 15 and 12, respectively for the Vikings, with each also grabbing six boards.

The Vikings will next be in action on Wednesday when they travel to Minnesota Morris for a 5:30 p.m. contest.
