Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Vikings Take Control in Fourth Quarter for Fifth Straight Win

SUPERIOR, Wis. - Tied at 50 going into the fourth on Saturday afternoon, the Bethany Lutheran women's basketball team outscored UW-Superior 18-8 en route to a 68-58 win. With the win the Vikings move to 10-13 overall and 9-3 in the UMAC while the Yellowjackets are 13-10 overall and 9-3 in conference play.

Both teams got out to a fairly decent start in this one, with each tallying eight points in the first 4:45 of play. Things would slow down the rest of the frame from there though, as Bethany would get just two free throws in the final five minutes and UWS would put four more points on the board to lead 12-10 after one.

Gianna Klarenbeek would knock down a three to begin the second quarter to give the Vikings the lead, but Superior would answer right back with a bucket inside. The Yellowjackets would then catch fire midway through the quarter, as they would score on four straight possessions including a pair of three pointers to go on a 10-5 run and lead 24-18. After extending their lead to seven points with five minutes to go, the Vikings would put their foot on the gas and make a big run to end the half, outscoring UWS 13-4 with five different players scoring to hold a two-point lead at the half.

Superior would score the first eight points of the third quarter before an Aubrea Kor and-one inside ended the drought. Klarenbeek would then score following a steal before a Kor jumper matched one from UWS to make it 39-38 in favor or the Yellowjackets. The two teams would then go back-and-forth over the next few minutes before Superior used a 7-2 run to lead 50-44. The Vikings would close the quarter on a 6-0 run though, as Megan Wegner would spark it with an and-one and the teams went to the fourth tied up at 50.

Arinn McGee would open the fourth quarter with two sets of free throws to put the Vikings up four before she would answer a bucket from UWS with an offensive rebound putback to keep the two possession lead. UWS would knock down a free throw to trim the lead to three, but Klarenbeek would knock down a clutch three to make it 59-53 midway through the frame. Bethany would lock in defensively over the next four minutes, as they would hold UWS scoreless and add four more points thanks to two each from Wegner and Kor. Leading by 10 with 50 seconds to play, the Vikings would knock down free throws late to salt the game away.

McGee continues her impressive run, as led the Vikings with 13 points and added 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. Kor added 11 points and four rebounds for Bethany while Wegner and Klarenbeek added 10 each to round out the scorers in double figures.

Bethany will be back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Minnesota Morris for a 7:15 p.m. contest.
