ASHLAND, Wis. - The Bethany Lutheran women's basketball team Saturday set a new program record for field goals made in a game when they connected on 45 shots in a 105-64 win over Northland. With the win the Vikings move to 8-13 overall and 7-3 in the UMAC while the Jills fall to 0-18 overall and 0-10 in conference play.
It was a blazing hot start for the Vikings, who posted one of the biggest quarters in program history as they exploded for 37 first quarter points. Bethany connected on 15-of-21 shot attempts in the first quarter and
Amelia Walker scored nine points in the quarter as they led 37-16 after one.
After
Kenadi Arndt buried a three and followed it up with a layup a few possessions later early in the second to give the Vikings a 44-18 lead, the offense would start to come back down to earth a little bit. They would be held scoreless for over three minutes before a
Lexiss Trygg bucket inside ended the drought. The Viking offense would stall once again though as it was over two minutes before they scored again, but they would add nine points in the final three minutes to lead 55-29 at the break.
Walker would score a quick four points to open up the third quarter before Trygg would find a bucket inside and
Gianna Klarenbeek a three for a quick 9-0 run. Northland would then respond with a 14-8 run of their own to bring the score to 72-43, but the Vikings would end the frame with an 11-2 run to lead 83-45 after three.
The Jills would open the fourth with a free throw but
Sydney Hoffman would get the next two buckets connecting twice from long range. The Vikings would continue to run away with it and it was a
Maria Esteban bucket with 3:18 left that gave them their 42nd field goal of the day that eclipsed the previous best mark for field goals made in a game of 41 from 2013.
Walker led Bethany with 17 points in the contest while Klarenbeek and Arndt each had 11. Trygg added 10 for the Vikings while 12 other players scored in the contest.
Bethany will be back in action on Wednesday when they host Northwestern at 7:15 p.m.
