Kaija competed in both cross country and track and field for Milaca High School. While in high school she helped lead the Wolves to their first ever state team championship. She finished her high school career with an individual state title in the 200m dash as well as six all state finishes, and four school records. In college, she spent two years as a Maverick for Minnesota State University, Mankato but never competed due to an injury. Following her time at MSU, she became a volunteer assistant coach at Fargo South High School. Kaija also helps in the summers officiating for the MSHSL and USATF MN.
