Mankato, Minn. - The women’s soccer team defeated rival Martin Luther at home 3-1. The Vikings outshot the Knights 18-13, and had a 6-4 corner kick advantage.
The first goal of the game came off a Vikings corner kick at the 8:56 mark. Paige Taylor (Coon Rapids, Minn./DCTC) booted one to the front of the goal where Anna Potz (White Bear Lake, Minn./Totino Grace) was waiting, she got a high leg on it to kick it past Martin Luther’s keeper.
The goal from Potz proved to set the tone for the game, with the Vikings keeping control throughout with the exception of a few breakaways. Jada Holden (Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn) was in net recording six saves.
Before the end of the half Kelli Kitzmann (Osseo, Minn./Osseo) scored unassisted at the 32:31 mark. The Knights were able to get on the board five minutes later on a direct free kick.
It was Kitzmann again in the 52nd minute to score an insurance goal. The in synch offense of BLC was able to run up the field with Taylor passing it off to Maggie LaPlante (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake) who dished it to Kitzmann. Both Taylor and LaPlante were rewarded with an assist.
The Vikings are now 8-2-2 overall and 4-1-2 in the conference. Bethany Lutheran will play Crown on Friday at 3:30 at home in the second conference match-up of the season with the Strom.
