New Ulm, Minn. - The women’s soccer team pulled out a miraculous win over Martin Luther on cold day that saw 35 mph winds. The Vikings came from behind to defeat the Knights 4-3 in an important win to secure a spot in the UMAC post-season.
The wind was a factor for both teams as the Knights outshot the Vikings 18-1 in the first half, and then switching sides, the Vikings outshot the Knights 26-0 in the second. Martin Luther scored three goals in the first 45 minutes. Joelle Pipal (Mankato, Minn./Mankato West) put the Vikings on the board at the 33:43 mark assisted by Paige Taylor (Coon Rapids, Minn./DCTC). It was 3-1 going into the locker room.
In the second half Maggie LaPlante found the back of the net unassisted in the 51st minute. Taylor assisted another goal, this time working with Anna Potz (White Bear Lake, Minn./Totino Grace), who recorded her goal at the 62:47 mark to tie the game. It was a nerve wracking final twenty minutes with the Vikings narrowly missing shots hitting the crossbar, and going wide.
Two seconds left in the game, leading scorer Kelli Kitzman (Orono, Minn./Orono) was able to knock one in after a scramble in front of the MLC keeper to win the game.
The Vikings will host Presentation and Minnesota-Morris this weekend in the last regular season games of the year.
