Kenosha, Wis. – The Bethany men’s basketball team traveled to Carthage to participate in a weekend tournament. The first game on Friday ended in a 109-92 loss against the host team. The Vikings then rebounded to defeat Indiana-Northwest 107-91.
Game One:
The Vikings were able to keep it close until an eight point unanswered run by Carthage ended the first half. Bethany Lutheran went into the locker room down 50-43 and couldn’t get back in the grove. The squad trailed the entire second half.
Sophomore transfer Alex Weldon (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/LinMar) led the Vikings with 21 points. Derek Peterson (Oakdale, Minn./Tartan) had 17 points and five boards. Garrett Benson (Rochester, Minn./Rochester Mayo) also recorded 17 points. Leading rebounder for Bethany Lutheran was Jared Matson (Albert Lea, Minn./Riverland C.C.) with six.
Game Two:
The Vikings came ready to play on Saturday taking on Indiana-Northwest, never allowing their opened to take the lead. Bethany Lutheran posted a .571 field goal percentage, and .444 three-point percentage to tally 107 points.
Weldon once again led in points contributing 27 in 23 minutes. He was on fire going 11-14 in field goals, and made all four attempts behind the arc. Trevor Bartlet (Waldorf, Minn./Concordia-St. Paul) got out of his offensive slump totaling 18 points and playing his always consistent defense with six boards. Peterson was the team’s leading rebounder with 10, he also had eight points and six assists.
The Vikings are now 2-2 on the season. The team travels to Waverly, Iowa tomorrow to square off against Wartburg at 7 p.m.
