Waverly, Iowa – The men’s basketball team came home with a victory after defeating Wartburg 84-76. The Vikings went into the locker room down one at halftime, but came back to take the lead with 13:26 on the clock and kept control the remainder of the contest.

The depth of the Viking squad was proven with 31 points coming off the bench compared to Wartburg’s 15. Bethany Lutheran stepped up when it counted scoring 15 more points in the paint, and 14 more points off turnovers compared to the Knights. The Vikings shot slightly better than their opponents going 43.5 percent from the field. Wartburg shot 42.1 percent.

Bethany Lutheran’s scoring was spread out, with five players hitting double figures. Alex Weldon (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/LinMar) led with 18 points and four rebounds. Derek Peterson (Oakdale, Minn./Tartan) had 17 points, four boards, and five steals. Patrick Garvin (Jackson, Minn./Jackson Country Central) managed 16 points and four assists in 22 minutes. Gavin Kroehler (Le Sueur,Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson) had 11 points and a team high eight rebounds, while Garrett Benson (Rochester, Minn./Rochester Mayo) recorded ten points.

The Vikings will take on Gustavus at home on Saturday. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
