Mankato, Minn. - Coming off a big win over Wartburg in Iowa, the Vikings geared up to take on Gustavus at home on Saturday night. In a disappointing loss Bethany Lutheran fell to the Gusties 90-68.
Garrett Benson (Rochester, Minn./Rochester Mayo) led the team with 17 points, he also had four steals. Freshman Sami Onsomu (Mankato, Minn./Mankato East) had nine points and led the team in rebounds with eight boards.
The Gusties guarded the Vikings denying any open looks from behind the arc causing a disheartening 16.7 three-point shooting percentage. Bethany Lutheran also struggled at the free throw line going 13-22; eight were made by Benson. The Vikes fared better inside with 30 points in the paint, keeping up with the Gustie’s squad that recorded 32 in the paint.
Gustavus out-rebounded the Vikings 42-36, and capitalized scoring 24 second chance points. The Gusties shot 50 percent from the field, while the Vikings went 44.8 percent from the field.
The Vikings are now 3-3 on the season. The team has a short break before resuming play on December 9 against Central. The home contest will begin at 7:30 p.m.
