Vikes come up short against Augsburg

Box Score

Mankato, Minn. - The Bethany Vikings lost a tough one to Augsburg 81-72 in Mankato Saturday afternoon. Bethany led 41-40 at halftime but a strong second half by the Auggies led to the loss for the Vikings. With this loss the Vikings finished 1-4 against the MIAC schools this season.

After a back and forth first half, the Auggies took over in the second half and hit their free throws down the stretch. Bethany was down by nine with seven minutes to go and cut the Auggie's lead to four, but never got any closer. Alex Weldon (Cedar Rapids Iowa/LinMar) got the crowd going with a dunk in the second half, but Bethany couldn’t get the shots to fall down in the final minutes to get the win.

Weldon led all scorers with 17 points for Bethany, with Garrett Benson (Rochester Minn./Rochester Mayo) adding 13. Trevor Bartelt (Waldorf Minn./Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton) had a team high six rebounds.

Bethany will play next on December 29th and 30th in California in the Westmont Tom Byron Classic. The next home game for the Vikings will be January 11th against UMAC rivals Martin Luther in the conference opener.
