Women's soccer wins first UMAC game of the season

Mankato, Minn. – The Vikings took on the Northland LumberJills in their first Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) game of the season. The Vikings were predicted to finish fifth in the conference according to the preseason coaches' poll, the LumberJills fourth. The squad came together to prove the predictions wrong and defeated Northland 2-0.
 
The Vikings outshot the Jills 21-15 with a 9-3 corner kick advantage. In the 50th minute Anna Potz (White Bear Lake, Minn./Totino Grace)  soared one over the keepers head for a goal assisted by Kelli Kitzman (Osseo, Minn./Osseo). It remained 1-0 until freshman Kinda Fairburn (Big Lake, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville) got the insurance goal at the 85:40 mark. Joelle Pipal (Mankato, Minn./Mankato West) was credited with the assist.
 
Freshman Jada Holden (Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn) was in goal with five saves to complete the shutout.
 
The Vikings are now 5-1 overall and 1-0 in the conference. Bethany Lutheran will take on preseason number one St. Scholastica tomorrow at home.
