Mankato, Minn. - The women’s basketball team came out to prove they can compete with the best of them in the conference opener against Martin Luther. After going into the locker room dead locked at 32 the Vikings picked up the intensity to have a dominate second half and finish the game 84-60.
The Vikings allowed the Knights to shoot 37.9 percent from the field in the first half, but Bethany Lutheran’s Nicole Jones (Mankato, Minn./Mankato East) gave the Vikings some momentum after tying the game on a jumper with a second left to go in the first.
The Vikes came out with the edge and held Martin Luther to just 28.6 percent in the second. The Vikings were 16-24 from the field in the second half posting an impressive 66.7 shooting percentage.
Jessica Englund (Andover, Minn./St. Francis) had another standout game recording a double-double with 31 points and 15 rebounds. Caitlin Meyer (Mankato, Minn./Minnesota Valley Lutheran) had her hand in almost every statistical category posting 15 points, seven rebounds, seven assists, and five blocks. Coming off a hot game against Finlandia Anna Cepek (Aurora, Neb./Aurora) had 12 points and nine rebounds. Like Meyer, Jones was represented all over the box score with 10 points, eight rebounds, five assists, two steals and one block.
The Vikings (5-6, 1-0) will be traveling to Duluth, Minnesota to take on St. Scholastica on Friday, then, continue the road trip to Ashland, Wisconsin to compete against Northland.
