The women’s basketball team faced some tough opponents during a trip to sunny San Diego, California in the Surf N’ Slam Classic. The Vikings fell to host team Point Loma Nazarene 47-72, UW-Whitewater 63-79, but bounced back in an overtime win versus Fairleigh 74-69.
In the first match-up the Vikings came out flat while Point Loma Nazarene was on fire ending the first half with the Vikings on the low end of a 40-20 score. The Vikings kept up with the host team in the second half but couldn’t crawl out of the deficit. Nicole Jones (Mankato, Minn./Mankato East), Anna Cepek (Aurora, Neb./Aurora) and Jessica Englund (Andover, Minn./St. Fancis) each scored 10 points. Englund managed a double-double recording 11 rebounds.
The Vikings took on UW-Whitewater after a day of rest. Bethany Lutheran went into the locker room tied 32-32, but were outscored by 16 in the second half after UW-Whitewater went on a 13-0 run. Turnovers plagued the Vikings committing 33 throughout the game; UW-Whitewater protected the ball only recording 12. The turnovers proved to be the difference maker with UW-Whitewater posting 32 points off turnovers. Cepek led the Vikings with 17 points. Jones had another solid game with 15 points and nine rebounds. Englund followed with 14 points and nine rebounds.
The final game of the trip went into overtime as Fairleigh crawled back into contention after a dismal first half. Bethany Lutheran outscored their opponent 31-18 in the first, but in the second allowed Fairleigh 45 points. Overtime was dominated by the Vikings despite going 7-12 from the charity stripe. Englund and Jones both recorded a double-double. Englund has 16 points and 20 rebounds, Jones had 21 points and 12 rebounds.
The Vikings will play Finlandia Friday at 6 p.m. in a home game before beginning conference play on Tuesday.
