St. Peter, Minn. – Although the snow on the ground is deep, the Bethany Lutheran women’s tennis season is already underway. The Vikings took on a loaded Minnesota State, Mankato team in the Swanson Tennis Center Friday, then on Saturday went head to head with MN-Crookston and Northern State.

The squad dropped the match against MSU 9-0 but fought hard for every point. Madara Matveja (Riga, Latvia/Riga Secondary) had the best performance for Bethany Lutheran falling in two sets 6-2, 6-2. Senior Matveja will be leading the Vikings this year, along with returners Rebecca Kopacek (Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo), and Brook Osmundson (Mapleton, Minn./Maple River). Bethany Lutheran will have some fresh faces on the squad hoping to make an impact.

The Vikings fared better against MN-Crookston with Matveja falling in a hard fought three sets. Osmundson defeated her opponent in two sets. In the doubles Kopacek and Matveja won with a score of 8-6. The Vikings were defeated by MN-Crookston with a final score 2-7. The Vikings took on Northern later in the day, but were unable to pull out a win dropping the match 0-9.

Next, the Vikings take on Northwestern (Iowa) in a non-conference match scheduled for February 25 in Owatonna, Minnesota at 4 p.m.
