Game 2 Box Score
Lakeland, Fla. - The Vikings suffered their first two losses of the season today in a doubleheader against Coe. Bethany Lutheran fell 3-2, and then 5-4 in the last games of spring training.
Game 1 (L 2-3)
After a forced day off because of the rain the Vikings looked to pick up where they left off on a five game winning streak. Things didn’t seem to go their way at the ball park committing four errors allowing Coe to score the last two runs of the game in the top of the seventh, one unearned. Until the seventh, the Vikings and Kohawks were tied at one after Brad Lawson (Belle Plaine, Minn./Dakota County CC) hit a sacrifice fly to left field batting in Casey Woodside (Albert Lea, Minn./MN-Crookston). Woodside had singled, and then advanced into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt.
The Vikings managed to get on board in the bottom of the seventh when the bases were loaded. Zach Herd (Gaylord, Minn./Sibley East) hit a sacrifice fly out to right field, it was the second out of the inning, but in the same play pinch runner Brian Vomhof (Crystal, Minn./Armstrong) was tagged out trying to advance to third ending the hopes for a comeback.
Bethany Lutheran’s troubles laid in their defensive play, while pitcher Cody Hallahan (Silver Lake, Minn./Minnesota State, Mankato) remained solid on the mound only allowing two earned runs and nine hits in 27 at bats. Justin Kohls (Watertown, Minn./Dakota Country CC) finished out the game pitching one inning, allowing just one hit and no runs.
Game 2 (L 4-5)
Game two was a similar story with the Vikings committing three errors defensively. Of the five runs scored by the Kohawks zero were earned.
Bethany Lutheran scored three of their runs in the third starting out with Vomhof being hit by a pitch. Benji Hager (Owatonna, Minn./Ridgewater CC) singled to the shortstop and Aaron Siefken (Lone Rock, Iowa/Iowa Central CC) walked loading the bases for Darin Hendley (Nicollet, Minn./Mankato East). Hendley singled up the middle for two runs batted in. Woodside reached on an error allowing Siefken to cross home plate.
In the sixth the Vikings got another run when Lawson doubled to left field. He batted in Woodside who singled to third base and then stole second.
Siefken pitched for the Vikings. In six innings he allowed nine hits, five runs, and zero earned runs.
The next game for Bethany Lutheran is scheduled for March 25 in Illinois. The Vikings will play a doubleheader against Rockford at 2 p.m.
