Solid play gives Bethany 6-1 win over Aurora

Auburndale, Fla. – The Vikings defeated Aurora of Illinois today 6-1 to increase their season record to 5-0 during spring training.

 

Starting pitcher Garrett Benson (Rochester, Minn./Rochester Mayo) allowed just four hits and one run in a full seven innings. This was the first win for Benson who threw eight strikeouts and walked two batters. Brad Lawson (Belle Plaine, Minn./Dakota Country CC) came in to throw the final two innings. He didn’t allow a hit and struck out two of the six batters faced to close out the game.

 

The first run of the game came in the second when Travis Fisher (Cedar, Minn./St. Francis) singled up the middle, and then stole second. Lawson bunted him over to third. Zach Herd (Gaylord, Minn./Sibley East) singled through the left side allowing Fisher to cross home plate.

 

In the third Darin Hendley (Nicollet, Minn./Mankato East) got things started by hitting a single up the middle. He was three for four on the day. Casey Woodside (Albert Lea, Minn./MN-Crookston) followed with another single. Chase Hirschauer (West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley) in his first game as a Vikings singled down the right field line to load the bases. Fisher was up once again and got hit by a pitch putting him on base and scoring one. Lawson single to right field for another RBI. Dylan Gass (Bird Island, Minn./BOLD) hit a sacrifice fly to right field allowing Hirschauer to score, then a throwing error by the opponent’s catcher trying to get Lawson out at second gave Fisher the opportunity to run home.

 

One more run came in the fourth when Hendley doubled to right center, followed by Woodside doubling down the left field line to bat Hendley in.  

 

Bethany Lutheran will play again tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. against Webster.
