Baseball drops two games to St. Thomas

St. Paul, Minn. – Bethany Lutheran dropped two games to St. Thomas today. The Tommies, who have traditionally been ranked in the top 25 in the country, defeated the Vikings 4-3 then 6-0.

St. Thomas got out to a small lead in the beginning of the game, but things were tied up 3-3 until the bottom of the seventh when a Tommie run crossed home plate to win the game. Both St. Thomas and Bethany Lutheran had nine hits; the difference maker was in the defense. The Tommies remained clean in the field with no errors, Bethany Lutheran had one error.

 

Aaron Siefken (Lone Rock, Iowa/Iowa Central CC) pitched another solid game striking out five batters and walked two. Of the four runs allowed three were earned.

 

The RBIs for the Vikings came from Casey Woodside (Albert Lea, Minn./MN-Crookston) who went two for three and scored one run, he was the only Viking to hit a double in the game. Tommy Kramer (Blooming Prairie, Minn./Rochester CC) also recorded an RBI when he grounded out to second base in the fourth. Travis Fisher was consistent at the plate going two for two and scoring two runs. Trent Sonnicksen (Blue Earth, Minn./Blue Earth Area) went two for three.

The Vikings were unable to score any runs on their seven hits in the second game. St. Thomas got six runs on eight hits. Like game one, Bethany Lutheran had one error in the field, while the Tommies had none.

 

Fisher got the start on the mound for the Vikings for the first time this year. He allowed six runs, five of which were earned in four innings pitched. Phillip Wessberg (Shoreview, Minn,/Mounds View) came in for the last two innings allowing two hits and striking out two.

 

Zach Herd (Gaylor, Minn./Sibley East) went two for three. Fisher hit a double as did Brad Lawson (Belle Plaine, Minn./Dakota County CC). The Vikings left six runners on base.

 

The Vikings will play Northwestern this weekend in a conference series. Friday the Vikings and Eagles will play a nine inning game starting at 3 p.m., and then will play a doubleheader starting at noon on Saturday.
