Mankato, Minn. – The Vikings lost a close one today to the eleventh ranked St. Scholastica Saints 6-7.
Bethany Lutheran had 16 hits on the day compared to St. Scholastica’s 12, but it was a few costly errors that made the difference. The Vikings committed three errors in the field, while the Saints had one.
Garrett Benson (Rochester, Minn./Rochester Mayo) started on the mound for the Vikings. He stayed there for five innings giving up seven runs on ten hits while striking out five batters and walking two. Darin Hendley (Nicollet, Minn./Mankato East) came in relief for Benson pitching three innings giving up two hits and striking out two.
The Vikings got on the board right away in the first inning scoring three runs. BLC remained in the lead until the fifth inning when the Saints pulled together five runs.
Dylan Gass (Bird Island, Minn. / BOLD) recorded four hits in five at bats and one RBI. Brad Lawson (Belle Plaine, Minn./Dakota County CC) had three hits scoring two runs and batting in two. Case Woodside (Albert Lea, Minn. / MN-Crookston) also had two RBI. Gass had two doubles on the day, Hendley had one. The Vikings left a total of 12 men on base.
Tomorrow, Bethany Lutheran will play a doubleheader against St. Scholastica starting at 12 noon.
