Mankato, Minn. – It was a difficult day at the park for the Vikings falling to St. Scholastica in a non-conference game against the fellow UMAC opponent.
The nine inning game was played replacing a cancelled doubleheader against Gustavus. It was a tied 3-3 ball game until the fifth inning when the Vikings gave up five runs. BLC was unable to get back in a rhythm eventually falling 18-6.
Garrett Benson (Rochester, Minn./Rochester Mayo) started on the mound pitching four innings giving up eight runs on nine hits. Benson hit two batters in the fifth, walked another, and gave up four runs before being replaced by Phil Wessberg (Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View ). Wessberg threw for 3.2 innings giving up five hits and striking out five batters. Of the five runs Wessberg gave up, four were earned. Brad Lawson (Belle Plaine, Minn./Dakota County CC) came in for 1.1 innings allowing five more runs, four of which were earned.
The Vikings had four errors in the field, while the Saints had three.
Bethany Lutheran’s three, four, and five hitters were all consistent at the plate. In the fifth spot, Travis Fisher (St. Francis, Minn./St. Francis) had two doubles going two for four with 3 RBI. Batting fourth in the line-up was Casey Woodside (Albert Lea, Minn./MN-Crookston) who also went two for four with two RBI and a home run. First baseman Darin Hendley hitting third (Nicollet, Minn./Mankato East) went two for three scoring three runs and also hit a solo home run in the bottom of the ninth.
The Vikings will play on Tuesday against St. Olaf for a non-conference doubleheader starting at 2:30 p.m.
