Vikings control game in conference opener victory over MLC

New Ulm, Minn. – The Vikings defeated arch rival Martin Luther 80-53 in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference opener.
 
The Vikings gained the lead six minutes in and held it for the remainder of the game. Bethany shot 41.1 percent from the field and 30.8 percent from three-point range. Martin Luther shot 27.4 percent from the field and 16.7 percent from behind the arc.
 
Bethany was able to score 25 points off of 18 Martin Luther turnovers and had 40 points in the paint compared to MLC’s 12. The Vikings outrebounded the Knights 52-49 and had over twice as many second chance points scoring 26 compared to MLC’s 11.
 
Alex Weldon (Marion, Iowa/Linmar) and Jacob Wensmann (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South) led the Vikings with 12 points each. Patrick Garvin (Jackson, Minn./Jackson County Central) had 11 points and led the Vikings in rebounds with nine. Garvin also had three assists, one block and one steal. Derek Peterson (St. Paul, Minn./Tartan) also had three assists. He added nine points, five rebounds and two steals.
 
Next, the Vikings will play in their conference home opener against St. Schoalstica on Friday, January 13th. Tip-off is at 7:30 p.m.
