New Ulm, Minn. – The Vikings fell in their Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) season opener at Martin Luther tonight 54-64.
Bethany led the Knights by three after the first half but the MLC offense stepped up to outscore the Vikings in the second shooting 43.8 percent from the field. The score was tied with three minutes left to go but the Knights made clutch shots down the stretch and played tough defense to contain the Vikings.
Bethany shot a 24.3 percent field goal percentage while Martin Luther shot 31.3 percent from the field. The Vikings outrebounded the Knights 55-50 and shot 31.6 percent from three-point range while Martin Luther went 0-11 from behind the arc. Bethany had 14 turnovers compared to MLC’s six.
Jessica Englund (Andover, Minn./St. Francis) recorded another double-double with 17 points and 15 rebounds. Anna Cepek (Aurora, Neb./Aurora) also had a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Kelsie Ammann (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North) led the team in assists with three.
The Vikings will play this Friday, January 13th against St. Scholastica in their UMAC home opener. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
