Box Score Claremont, Calif. - The Bethany women's basketball team had two goals in mind when they traveled out to California for the CMS-Caltech Classic this weekend. First, they wanted to build some team bonding. Secondly, they wanted to build some momentum going into the conference season. They succeeded on both counts as Shelby Wiederhoeft was named to the All-Tournament team as the Vikings split a pair of games, including a 79-43 romp over Caltech on Sunday.
Wiederhoeft (Truman, Minn. / Truman) proved she was a post presence in both contests. She tallied 18 points and grabbed 19 rebounds in a 69-62 loss to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday and followed that up with a 14 point, 15 rebound performance on Sunday. She shot 54 percent from the floor over the weekend and dished out five assists.
Junior guard Jade Pelzl (Rushford, Minn. / UW-Eau Claire) also scored in double digits in both contests. She scored 16 points on Saturday while hitting four-of-eight shots from beyond the arc while duplicating that same feat in Sunday's win.
Freshman Briana Brandts (St. James, Minn. / St. James) nearly pulled off dual double-doubles. The guard/forward collected ten rebounds and scored seven points on Saturday. She grabbed 12 more boards and poured in 15 points on Sunday.
The Vikings kept Saturday's game close by hitting five-of-six from three-point range in the first half. The homestanding Athenas though held a 37-34 lead at the break. CMS slowly opened up their lead throughout the second half and were led by Madeline Barnes (19 points) and Kyra Ray (13 points).
On Sunday, the Vikings opened up with an 18-2 lead over the Beavers of Caltech and never looked back. Bethany's stingy defense held the Beavers to just 23 percent shooting on the afternoon. Caltech was a mere 3-for-19 from three-point range (15%).
Bethany is now 2-9 as they head into UMAC play. They play host to Martin Luther Tuesday, January 8 at the SFC for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.
