Minneapolis, Minn. – The Bethany baseball team played its season opener in the Metrodome versus Hamline. The Vikings split with the Pipers, a team that won the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference last season and advanced to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
Game One (W 4-1) Box Score
Senior Aaron Siefken (Lone Rock, Iowa/Iowa Central CC) was on the mound for the Vikings earning the win. He struck out nine batters in six innings and gave up just three hits. He didn’t walk a single batter and had no earned runs. Jordan Sinell (Le Sueur, Minn./Minnesota State, Mankato) came in for the save striking out one batter and retiring the other two with a fly out and ground out.
Siefken also led offensively earning three RBI, two of which came in the bottom of the sixth off of a home run. He also hit a sacrifice fly in the fourth finishing with one run and one hit in two at bats. Travis Fisher (Cedar, Minn./St. Francis) earned the team’s other RBI, he had two hits in two at bats and one run. Dylan Gass (Bird Island, Minn./BOLD) had two runs and two hits.
Bethany ended the game with seven hits and two errors and five left on base. The Pipers had three hits, one error and four left on base.
Game Two (L 2-11) Box Score
In the second game the Vikings went through four pitchers. Fisher started out pitching two and a third innings giving up five hits and five earned runs. Alex Klug (Caledonia, Minn./Rochester CC) came in for an inning giving up three hits and six runs, four of which were earned. Dylan McCormick (Hutchinson, Minn./Hutchinson) and Phil Wessberg (Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View) finished off the game. Each pitcher struck out two batters, walked one, and didn’t give up any runs.
The Vikings only managed to cross home plate once in the third and once in the fourth inning. Freshman Lucas Herd (Gaylord, Minn./Sibley East) had one hit and one RBI when he doubled to left field. Gass had two hits and one run. Andy Gensch (Apple Valley, Minn./Iowa Central CC) had an RBI on a ground out to third base. Freshman Joe Thuolsky (Little Falls, Minn./Little Falls) had two hits and one run.
The Vikings ended the second game with five hits, one error and six left on base. Hamline had 10 hits, three errors and eight left on base.
The Vikings are 1-1 on the season. Bethany’s next game will be a doubleheader at the Metrodome against Carleton on February 28 at 9:45 p.m.
