Mankato, Minn. – The Vikings were swept by St. Scholastica at home 13-10 and then 5-1. Bethany always got a fast start on the Saints taking the lead early, but St. Scholastica found ways to pull out a victory in the end.
Game 1 (L 10-13)
Only seven of the 13 runs scored by St. Scholastica were earned as the Vikings were plagued with untimely errors in the field. Jordan Sinell (Le Sueur, Minn./Minnesota State, Mankato) pitched the first two innings giving up seven hits. Only three of the eight runs that came in during Sinell’s time were earned. Travis Fisher (Cedar, Minn./St. Francis) came in for two third innings giving up two runs on three hits. Alex Klug (Caledonia, Minn./Rochester CC) was credited with the loss despite giving up just three hits in his two and two third innings pitched. Klug let in two runs. Eric Kropp (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) took the mound for two third innings giving up one hit. Dylan McCormick (Hutchinson, Minn./Hutchinson) pitched the last inning for the Vikings without giving up a hit.
Offensively the Vikings posted three runs in the first inning. Lucas Herd (Gaylord, Minn./Sibley East) walked with bases loaded to record the first run for Bethany. Fisher then advanced on catcher’s interference with the bases loaded for another run. Mitch Kleist (Eagle Lake, Minn./Mankato East) reached on a Saint error for the third run of the inning.
In the second Bethany posted seven runs highlighted by a grand slam by Clint Aretz (NYA, Minn./Ridgewater CC). He had four RBI in the game. Fisher ended the game with two RBI. Adam Geiger (Mankato, Minn./Immanuel Lutheran) led the team hitting three for four with two runs and one RBI.
BLC was unable to post any more runs while St. Scholastica used runs in the fifth and sixth to pull ahead. Bethany had four errors in the field and left 10 on base. The Saints had five errors and left 12 on base.
Game 2 (L 1-5)
Bethany once again got a run on the board right away in the first innings but was unable to score again. Lead off hitter Tommy Kramer (Blooming Prairie, Minn./Rochester CC) was walked. Casey Woodside (Albert Lea, Minn./Minnesota-Crookston) then doubled down the left line. With runners on second and third with one out Geiger grounded out to allow Kramer to score.
In addition to Woodside, Kramer and Geiger also doubled. Those were Bethany’s only three hits of the game. The Vikings and St. Scholastica each had one error in the field. BLC left seven on base while the Saints left eight on base.
Garrett Benson (Rochester, Minn./Rochester Mayo) pitched six and two third innings. He gave up 11 hits and five runs, only three of which were earned. Benson stuck out two batters. Phil Wessberg (Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View) came in for the final out.
Next, the Vikings will travel to Martin Luther for a nine inning game on April 3rd at 3 p.m.
