Tucson, Ariz. – The Vikings got on the right track with a win versus Rockford swinging the bats to a 25-7 win.
Bethany had five pitchers in the nine inning game beginning with Alex Klug (Caledonia, Minn./Rochester CC). He allowed four runs on five hits and had three strike outs. Coming in for Klug was Philip Wessberg (Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View) who completed two innings giving up one run on four hits. Wessberg was credited with the win. Eric Kropp (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) was in for two innings giving up just one hit and striking out two batters. James Dean (Eden Prairie, Minn./Dodge CC) and Jake Gleason (Loretto, Minn./Mesabi CC) got on the mound for the first time in a Vikings uniform. Dean gave up one run and one hit striking out two. Gleason gave up one run on two hits and also struck out two.
Whatever offensive problems the Vikings had in the beginning of the spring trip are over coming out of the funk that kept them scoreless yesterday. Bethany had 27 hits, four of which were home runs. That puts the game down in the record books for second most hits and second most home runs in a game since BLC became an NCAA Division III institution. Clint Aretz (NYA, Minn./Ridgewater CC), Sam Stier (Austin, Minn./Pacelli), Jeremy Bade (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) and Casey Woodside (Albert Lea, Minn./Minnesota-Crookston) all hit home runs. Adam Geiger (Mankato, Minn./Immanuel Lutheran) had three doubles. Lucas Herd (Gaylord, Minn./Sibley East) went four for four.
The Vikings will play Pitt-Bradford on Thursday, March 8. The doubleheader will start at 1 p.m. (CST).
